The harbour and shipping town Svendborg is the capital of South Funen and has a history, which dates all the way back to the early Middle Ages. Here you can experience an old town centre with small cosy streets, squares and charming courtyard environments. Enjoy the atmosphere in the harbour, Svendborg Havn, which offers space for ferries, yachts and tour boats that sail you around in the South Funen archipelago. Furthermore, Svendborg offers museums, theatres, cafés, restaurants and good shopping opportunities, e.g. in the part of town Latinerkvarteret, which is famous for its unique atmosphere and many artisans. When you spend your holiday in a holiday home in Svendborg, you have everything that you can wish for right outside the door!
The beach Christiansminde Strand is a lovely and child-friendly sandy beach with a bathing jetty. The beach is located by the park and wood area Christiansminde, east of the harbour in Svendborg. Here you can relax in the soft sand, swim in the shallow clear water, play ball or make a picnic with a view of the South funen archipelago.
Very close to the centre of Svendborg you can take a walk in the wood Rottefældeskoven, which offers an idyllic stream and more walking paths. The wood is scenic at all times of the year.
Christiansminde is a beautiful area with wood and park, which stretches along the coast in the eastern part of Svendborg. Here you will also find the lovely bathing beach with a bathing jetty. A path leads you along the water through the wood.
To the north-west of Svendborg you can visit the forest Hvidkilde Skov, which contains many walking paths and lakes, among others the large lake Hvidkilde Sø, where you can see the idyllic thatched and half-timbered watermill Røde Mølle.
Near the castle Valdemars Slot on the peninsular Tåsinge you can experience a 400 years old Ambrosium oak with a trunk, which is 7 metres in circumference.
When you spend your holiday in Svendborg, numerous activities are available right outside your holiday home. You can bowl, swim in a waterworld and drive in go-cart among other things. The location of Svendborg, right by the water, enables you to swim, sail in sea kayak og go on a sail with a tour boat or a vintage ship in the South Funen archipelago during the summer.
You can ride along the 220 km long bicycle path Øhavsstien, which leads you through unique landscapes. The route starts in Lundeborg towards east and ends in Falsled in the western part of Funen. The area offers many walking routes, e.g. in the forests and along the shore.
Along the shore you will find many good fishing spots, but you can also fish in one of the Put and Take fishponds of the area.
Golfers can test the course of Svendborg Golfklub, which is a scenic park course in a slightly hilly terrain. The golf course is surrounded by the forest Hvidkilde Skov and offers a view of the South Funen archipelago.
Svendborg offers many interesting sights for the whole family. You can for example go on a sail in beautiful old ships, arranged by Maritimt Center Danmark. Visit the experience centre Naturama and experience natural history in a new and vivid way. In the idyllic half-timbered house Anne Hvides Gård, the oldest building in Svendborg, you can see an exhibition about the history of Svendborg and the archaeology of South Funen. In the art building, Kunstbygningen SAK, you can experience varying exhibitions with visual arts and sculptures.
The preserved Dutch windmill, Christiansmølle, is the landmark of Svendborg. The white mill was re-erected in 1859 and was in operation until 1958. The beautiful mill is illuminated in the dark and can be seen from everywhere in Svendborg.
You can go on an excursion to Tåsinge, which is connected to Svendborg with the bridge Svendborgsundbroen. Here you can visit Troense, which contains many preserved half-timbered houses from the 18th century, and a cosy marina. At the museum Troense Søfartssamling you can see ships and photos of old ships. At Tåsinge Skipperhjem you will have the story about Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre. One of Denmark’s most beautiful castles, Valdemars Slot, is situated on Tåsinge, and here you can visit more museums with e.g. art, furniture, trophies and toys.
When you spend your holiday on Funen you ought to visit the impressive castle Egeskov Slot near Kværndrup – Europe’s best preserved renaissance water castle. Here you will find exhibitions about motorcycles, vintage cars and fashion as well as activities like Tree Top Walking, segways and a large maze. The garden of Egeskov is also an experience in itself! (15 km).
