Area

Meadow, fields and plantations surround the small holiday area of Gerå by the Kattegat in north-eastern Jutland. Gerå is an ideal holiday destination for bird enthusiasts, anglers and everyone, who wish to have a relaxing holiday in quiet and undisturbed surroundings. It is possible to buy groceries in the area, and you will find a vide selection of shops and restaurants in the nearby towns Dronninglund (10 km), Sæby (27 km), Hals (15 km) and Aalborg (39 km).

Beach

Outside Gerå you will find a beach with stones and shallow water. It is possible to swim here, but you have to go far out before the water gets deep. Windsurfers have good conditions here. By Asaa and Lyngså, good and child-friendly beaches with fine sand, shallow water, sandy bottom and dunes are available. Both beaches have the Blue Flag.

Nature

The stream 'Geråen' flows into the Kattegat right next to Gerå. The game preserve 'Aså-Gerå Vildtreservat' is an EU-bird sanctuary, which stretches from Gerå and 3-4 kilometres towards north to Aså along the coast. Here you can observe the rich bird life. 10 kilometres inland you will find the scenic forest 'Dronninglund Storskov' with marked walking routes, which lead you over hills and through forests with meadows and a lake. Experience f.x. the 'det uforklarlige vandløb' (the inexplicable stream), which flows uphill - contrary to the law of gravitation. Between Albæk and Voerså 'Holtbjerg', a fascinating and undulating moraine landscape is situated. From here you will have an amazing view of the sea and the small villages of the areas. Don¿t miss the seven bronze age mounds of Holtbjerg (14 km). Lovely nature experiences await you in the quiet and untouched nature around Gerå.

Activities

The area offers good possibilities for anglers, as you can fish in the sea, in the stream 'Voer Å' and in the lake 'Dybvad Søpark'. Near Dronninglund the nature park 'Naturparken' is situated. Here activities for the whole family are available, as f.x. tennis, minigolf, pentanque and beach volley. Golf players can try out more courses in this area, and the scenic course by Sæby Golfklub is the nearest.

Worth a visit

The battery by the south beach of Hou is a well-preserved fortress from the English war during the years 1807-14 (8 km). See the beautiful and well-preserved castle 'Dronninglund Slot', which was build back in the 11th century, and take f.x. a walk in the lovely castle park (10 km). In the art centre 'Dronninglund Kunstcenter' you can experience both national as well as international art. Visit the peaceful and idyllic town Voerså. By the old inn you can rent rowboats and water cycles, sail up the stream and experience the genuine Danish nature (12 km). The fortress 'Hals Skanse' is situated by the mouth of the Liim Fiord. The powder magazine and the arsenal are preserved and a museum has been established in the latter. The museum of Hals shows an exhibition of local history about the sea, inlet, town, fortress, war and occupation (15 km).

Excursion spots

The charming market town Sæby is situated 27 km north of Gerå. Here you will find old, well-preserved houses, pedestrian streets, streets of cobble stones, the watermill by the stream 'Sæby Å', a cosy harbour atmosphere with a marina and a lovely bathing beach (40 km). The castle 'Voergård Slot' by Flauenskjold is one of Denmark's most beautiful Renaissance buildings and is with its park, moats, French art treasures and fine collections of furniture and interior definitely worth a visit (28 km). Aalborg is the 'capital' of northern Jutland. Here you will find art, culture, pedestrian streets, the charming old town centre, the amusement street 'Jomfru Ane Gade' and various restaurants (39 km). Frederikshavn is a good commercial town, from where you can go on a daytrip to the lake Læsø or Sweden. A drive to the top of the hills behind Sæby and Frederikshavn provides you with a lovely view over the water, the harbour, the town and the landscape (44 km).
