Gl. Skagen is a charming and exclusive quarter, located just south of the market town Skagen. The area is characterized by yellow Skagen houses with red tiled roofs and white edgings, traditional seaside hotels, inviting cafés and restaurants, which serve fresh fish courses, as well as a lovely beach with dunes and the famous sunset bench. Furthermore, you will find a jewel workshop and a gallery in this area.
Gl. Skagen is a quiet and scenic part of town with a charm of its own, which invites comfort, relaxation and absorption.
In the centre of Skagen you can enjoy the atmosphere in the vivid fishing harbour and marina with the famous red fish storehouses, shop in the cosy pedestrian street, visit the many sights and discover what inspired the famous Skagen painters.
The nature, the attractions, the town life and the harbour make Skagen an extremely attractive holiday destination at all times of the year.
The beach Højen Strand in Gl. Skagen is a lovely beach with coarse sand, Blue Flag, dunes with lyme grass, good waves and ideal conditions for windsurfing and swimming. From the beach you can admire the sight of the colourful surfers on the sea. Equally, you can enjoy the beautiful sight of the sinking sun from here every evening.
If you wish to swim from a more child-friendly beach, you can visit the calm and sandy Kattegat beach Damstederne (5 km). Here you can enjoy the shallow and clean water as well as the gentle waves. The beach has been awarded with the Blue Flag as well and is famous for its high dune 'Stokmilen'.
Gl. Skagen is surrounded by unique and magnificent nature. The landscape is characterized by vast and unspoiled moor areas with woods and dunes as well as the gentle Kattegat and the rough North Sea. The two seas collide by Grenen - Denmark's northernmost point. An impressive sight!
The spit Skagens Odde is a popular excursion point for bird enthusiasts because of the migration.
The dune plantation Skagen Klitplantage is located between the two seas and has a scenic and varying landscape. Here you can experience the migrating dune Sandmilen.
One of Europe's largest migrating dunes, Råbjerg Mile, is app. 40 m high. It moves annually up to 15 m towards northeast and has created a miniature desert of app. 1 km2 southwest of Skagen. The sand drift has left Råbjerg Stenene - a stone plain, which has come into existence because the fine sand from Råbjerg Mile is moved, and the large rocks stay behind. From the highest point of the migrating dune you can see all the way to Grenen (16 km).
The beaches in and around Skagen invite swimming, sunbathing, walks as well as beach and watersport activities. You can also hike, ride on horses or drive on bicycles in the scenic moor and dune plantations.
Furthermore, Skagen offers a bowling alley, a swimming baths and a minigolf course. The angler can throw in the line from the shore, from the pier of the harbour or from a boat. You can also go deep-sea fishing with a fishing vessel, which sails out from the harbour. Lakes and streams of the hinterland offer good fishing opportunities as well.
Golfers can test the scenic course of Hvide Klit Golfklub in Bunken, where you will find an 18-hole course as well as a Par-3 course with 6 holes (17 km).
Every year in July a music festival with mainly folk music is arranged in Skagen, and during the weekend of the festival, the whole town celebrates.
The jewel artist Susanne Lanng has established her workshop and jewel gallery in an old fishing house in Gl. Skagen.
The gallery Redningshuset is located in an old and evocative rescue house with sand on the floor. Enjoy the varying exhibitions throughout the year.
The tower of the buried church 'Den Tilsandede Kirke' rises from the sand in a scenic plantation area. The vast sand drift of the area is responsible for the burial of the church (2 km).
In the house of Michael and Anna Ancher you can experience how the 2 Skagen painters lived and worked (5 km).
At Skagen Museum on Brøndumsvej the paintings, created by the Danish painters of the golden age, are exhibited (5 km).
Skagen Odde Naturcenter on Batterivej is an interesting nature centre with the theme natural phenomenon. Interactive exhibitions with the element of wind, water, light and sand are displayed here (6 km).
Furthermore, Skagen offers museums with themes like art, natural history, amber and teddy bears.
The 48-metres high Skagen Fyr is Denmark's highest lighthouse. After climbing the 210 steps on the spiral staircase you can enjoy a great view of Skagen and the area (7 km).
Farm Fun by Ålbæk is a zoological park with a play area. Come close to the animals of the farm, f.x. hogs, cows, sheep, kangaroos, emus, ponies, rabbits, goats, guinea pigs, peacocks and lamas, or try the amusing moon cars, the swings and the bouncing cushion (18 km).
Visit the interesting eagle sanctuary 'Ørnereservatet' near Tversted. During the summer you can get close to some of the world's largest eagle species and watch them being fed in the air. Experience the peregrine falcon, gerfalcon, goshawk, golden eagle and white-tailed eagle (26 km).
The museum Nordsømuseet in Hirtshals is the holder of Europe's largest salt-water aquarium Ocenariet with 4.5 million litres of water. At Nordsømuseet you can experience app. 60 species of fish from the North Sea and even touch some of them (47 km).
