Helsingør is situated in the north-eastern corner of Sealand with a view to Helsingborg in Sweden. The town is famous for i.a. the castle 'Kronborg Slot' - one of Northern Europe's most significant Renaissance castles, the large, modern and evocative marina just north of the castle, the ferry harbour just south of the castle, the castle 'Marienlyst Slot', which is situated behind the marina, the lovely beaches as well as the many museums and leisure activities. Furthermore, you will find good shopping possibilities and a number of restaurants in town. The distances to forests, lakes, Sweden, famous holiday towns and small, cosy fishing hamlets are short.
2 of the most lovely bathing beaches of the sound 'Øresund' are situated close to 'Helsingør Nordhavn' - the fishing harbour and marina of the town. Both beaches are very suitable for children. The most visited beaches of the area you will find in Grønnehave, Kronborg, Snekkersten (3 km towards south) and Espergærde (6 km towards south).
The beach of Hornbæk is a magnificent bathing beach with fine-grained sand, shallow water, high dunes, Blue Flag and lifeguards during the high season. Beach activities like water cycling, beach volley and windsurfing are very popular here. The harbour of Hornbæk is situated behind the beach, and the piers make sure that the beach solely has fine sand (12 km).
It is also possible to swim in the lake 'Esrum Sø'. By Fredensborg (14 km) you will find a good bathing spot near the castle 'Fredensborg Slot', which is the summer residence for the Danish Queen Margrethe and the home of the crown prince Frederik and princess Mary.
'Teglstrup Hegn' and 'Hellebæk Skov' are parts of the forest district 'Kronborg Statsskovdistrikt', and hardwood trees, pines, hills, meadows and hollows with more lakes, characterize the area. Don't miss a walk around the idyllic pond 'Bondedam', which supplies the mill wheels with waterpower. The forest is situated just north-west of Helsingør.
The scenically situated lake 'Gurre Sø' is surrounded by the forests 'Horserød Hegn' towards north and the peaceful and almost untouched 'Gurre Vang' (10 km towards west).
The beautiful forest 'Hornbæk Plantage' has a rich animal life and vegetation as well as many marked walking and bicycle paths (12 km).
In the hilly and varying landscape, surrounding Tikøb, you will find the lake 'Arresø' - Denmark's largest lake with a water surface of 40 square kilometres - and the lake 'Esrum Sø', which is surrounded by forest (14 km).
Should the bathing weather let you down, you can try the water world 'Marienlyst Badeland' and the swimming baths 'Helsingør Svømmehal'.
Helsingør offers more bowling alleys and minigolf courses. It is also possible to take a trip with a vintage train here during the summer.
Anglers will find good opportunities along the shore between Helsingør and Hornbæk. You can also fish from the piers of the harbour in Helsingør and from a dinghy, which can be rented in town. If you wish to go deep-sea fishing, you can go onboard a ship, which sails out from Helsingør. Furthermore, you can fish in the lakes of the area, like f.x. 'Sorte Sø', 'Klare Sø', 'Gurre Sø', 'Hornbæk Sø' as well as the Put & Take fishpond 'Fredensborg Ørredfiskeri'.
Some of Denmark's best golf courses are situated in North Sealand. 'Helsingør Golf Club', 'Hornbæk Golfklub', 'Simon's Golf Club' by Kvistgård, 'Fredensborg Golf Club' and 'Nivå Golf Klub' are just some of the closest.
The castle 'Kronborg Slot' is situated by the entrance to the sound 'Øresund'. The castle is a world-famous sight because of Shakespeare's drama about the Danish prince Hamlet. The castle is an elegant Renaissance building with a unique location.
Here you will find the museum 'Handels- og Søfartsmuseet', which contains Denmark's largest maritime collection.
The castle 'Marienlyst Slot' is an architectural pearl, which is situated with a view of 'Øresund'. The castle function as a museum with a collection of paintings and silver works.
'Danmarks Tekniske Museum' contains a large collection of planes, steam engines, inventions, electrical devices and cars.
'Helsingør Bymuseum' in the beautiful Carmelite house from 1516 tells the story of the Sound Dues and the business life of the town.
The oldest wine shop in town 'Helsingør Vinmuseum' is located in the old and evocative cellars under the mansion 'Det Classenske Palæ'. The museum contains a wine historic exhibition.
Take a trip to Sweden - the sail with the ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg takes 20 minutes.
'Hammermøllen' in Hellebæk (5 km) is a restored mill, which today functions as a museum and café.
By the castle ruins 'Gurre Slot' from the 12th. century the past comes alive, and it is said that the place is haunted at night (9 km).
'Nordsjællands Legetøjsmuseum' in Kvistgård exhibits toys from the period 1840-1960. An interesting place for the whole family (10 km).
Louisiana in Humlebæk is a museum for modern art. The unique museum buildings and the beautiful old park create interesting settings for the art (10 km).
The palace garden by 'Fredensborg Slot' is open year round, and you can follow 16 km passages and paths round the beautiful garden and watch sculptures, pavilions, bridges etc (14 km).
The 'Karen Blixen Museum' at Rungstedlund has been established with gallery, exhibitions, the private living rooms of Karen Blixen, a slide department, a library room and a café (25 km).
