Ry is situated in beautiful, unspoiled and hilly nature, close to Silkeborg, the ’mountain’ Himmelbjerget, the stream Gudenåen and Denmark’s largest forest area. The lakes Birksø, Knudsø, Rye Mølle Sø and Vessø surround the comfortable town, which contains more shops and restaurants. From Ry you can sail with the world’s oldest active paddle steamer Hjejlen directly to Himmelbjerget and take a ride with the historic vintage train in the scenic nature of Central Jutland.
In Silkeborg, 20 km from Ry, you can shop in the pedestrian street and visit the many sights of the town.

By the lake Knudsø, which is located directly by Ry, you can swim from a lovely sandy beach with a long bathing jetty. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the pure water.
It is also possible to swim in other lakes in the area. Visit for example Almindsø – one of the purest lakes in Denmark. Here you will find 2 public baths with sandy beaches, Østre and Vestre Søbad, as well as changing facilities and a lifeguard during the summer. Almindsø is located in the south-western end of Silkeborg, 20 km from Ry.
Do you wish to swim in the sea, you will find lovely bathing beaches on both sides of Denmark. The distance to the beaches of the eastern coast is 50 km and 110 km to the beaches of the western coast.
Ry is located in a scenic, green and hilly landscape with beautiful lakes, old beech forests, fields with grazing animals, ranges of hills, idyllic streams and river valleys as well as Denmark’s third highest point Himmelbjerget.
The many lakes of the area contain pure and clear. You can actually drink the water from Almindsø in spring.
South of Silkeborg you can visit the forests Silkeborgskovene – Denmark’s largest forest area, covering an area of 224 square metres. The area offers countless viewpoints, from which you can enjoy the view of the unique nature.
The lakes and streams of the area are suited for sailing, and you can rent canoes, kayaks and boats – among others with Ry Kanofart.
As the area is abounding in water the fishing opportunities are good. You will find a flood of lakes, streams, brooks and Put & Take fishponds, where you can catch trout, pike, perch, roach, zander and salmon among others.
The magnificent nature is rich in walking and bicycle paths, which invite nature experiences on foot or bicycle.
You can also go on a sail with Hjejlen, the world’s oldest steamboat, which sails between Ry and Himmelbjerget, or take the vintage train, which leaves from Ry during the summer.
More golf courses are available in the area, and you can for example test the courses of Ksn Golf (22 km) and Silkeborg Golf Club (23 km).
Furthermore, you can try an indoor alpine ski facility with an all-year ski slope in Gjern (29 km).
The freshwater museum Ferskvandsmuseet in Ry is an interesting nature and culture-historical museum with an exhibition, which deals with life by lakes and streams.
Experience the 147 m high ’mountain’ Himmelbjerget - one of the most famous and scenic excursion spots of the area. Himmelbjerget is located in an area with beech forest, valleys, lakes and water routes for both Ry and Silkeborg (9 km).
AQUA Ferskvands Akvarium is Denmark’s only and Scandinavia’s largest freshwater aquarium (19 km).
Silkeborg Museum is located in the oldest building in town. The culture-historical museum contains an iron age exhibition, an antique glass collection and Tollundmanden - a bog find from the past (20 km).
The art museum Silkeborg Kunstmuseum is scenically situated by the stream Gudenåen and contains works of Asger Jorn (20 km).
The art centre Kunstcentret Silkeborg Bad is surrounded by forest and lakes - here nature, art, sculptures and beautiful buildings form a synthesis (20 km).
At Jysk Automobilmuseum in Gjern you can experience an impressive collection of 140 restored vintage vehicles (29 km).
Visit the charming and historic inn Svostrup Kro, which is located directly by the idyllic stream Gudenåen. The inn is a museum in itself and offers an irresistible menu (31 km).
Givskud Zoo is a combined lion park and zoo. You can follow the safari route through the savannah areas and the lion territory in your own car or in the safari bus and come close to the wild animals (58 km).
LEGOLAND® is build out of 50 million and offers more than 50 amusements with speed and excitement. The funniest playground for the whole family contains knights in armour, pirates, tough cowboys, wild Indians and much more (69 km).
