By Sottrupskov you can spend your holiday in the middle of lovely beech forests and orchards, and only a few metres from the sound 'Als Sund'. Experience the cultural heritage of South Jutland and enjoy the many relics, old mills and castles as well as ancient burial chambers. Sottrupskov is an ideal holiday destination for i.a. anglers, nature lovers, golf players and persons, who are interested in Danish history. It is possible to buy groceries in the area, and Sønderborg on Als offers good shopping possibilities, restaurants, leisure activities and sights.
The holiday house area is situated only a few metres from a tempting, sandy bathing beach.
You can also visit the beach of Varnæs, which is a lovely sandy beach. The beach is suitable for children and situated between the cove 'Varnæs Vig' and the point 'Varnæs Hoved' (18 km). Here you can swim, sail or fish from small boats. It is often possible to find amber between the stones at the point 'Varnæs Hoved'.
South Jutland is a very wooded area, and along the shores of the eastern coast you will find large beech forests, like f.x. 'Sottrup Storskov'. The fertile ground and the mild climate of the area create the optimal conditions for the cultivation of fruits, and therefore you will see a number of orchards here.
The meadow 'Nydam Mose', about 2 km from the holiday house area, contains many valuable prehistoric finds. Until now no less than 3 boats, many weapons and other effects have been found here. Follow the marked walking path 'Nydamssti', which leads you along the sound 'Als Sund' over the area 'Sandbjerg' to the house 'Nydamshuset', where you can learn more about the meadow and the excavations.
The point 'Varnæs Hoved' is a preserved and hilly area, which is characterized by fields, small marshes, forests and a lake (18 km).
During the summer, a number of events take place in South Jutland. You can experience town fairs, riding at the ring, cattle show and markets. Go on a trip with the historic railway (between Aabenraa and Rødekro) or sail with the paddle steamer from Aabenraa. Visit f.x. the island Barsø, where a martial chief with the name 'Bars' ravaged during the viking age.
Anglers will find good opportunities in this area, as it is possible to fish from the shores or onboard a fishing vessel, which sails out from Aabenraa. Furthermore, a number of Put & Take fishponds are available in the area.
South Jutland is rich in golf courses, and golf players can try out the courses of f.x. 'Benniksgaard Golf Klub' by Gråsten (15 km) or 'Sønderjyllands Golfklub' by Tinglev (39 km).
If you feel like walking along the coast, you can walk along the famous path 'Gendarmstien', which was formerly used for looking out for smugglers.
The holiday area is situated in a culture-historical and interesting district. In June 1864 a war between Denmark and Prussia took place here. The many tombstones and monument bear witness of this. 'Dybbøl Mølle' from 1744 was formerly situated in a military area. Today the mill function as a museum and displays pictures and relics from the battlefield (8 km).
Visit Sønderborg with the beautiful waterfront, the historic buildings, the good shopping possibilities and the castle, where you can admire collections from the Middle Ages and up till today (11 km).
The castle 'Gråsten Slot' and the palace garden are surrounded by scenic nature with forest and a lake. The profusely decorated castle church and the park, which is abounding in flowers, are open to the public (15 km).
The forest 'Varnæs Tykke' contains the stone 'Kæmpestenen', which is surrounded by 93 kerbstones. A cleared burial chamber is visible in the middle (18 km).
Høruphav on the island Als is a small and cosy fishing hamlet with a boat harbour (19 km). Enjoy the atmosphere here or follow a walking path from here to the nature area 'Trillen'. In the glass factory 'Dansk Glaskunst' in Høruphav you can experience the workshop and watch the glassblowers work. Only sand, soda, lime as well as approved dyestuffs and raw materials are used here. 'Dansk Glaskunst' is the only glass factory in Northern Europe, where stones are incorporated in solid, hand made glass.
In Aabenraa you can enjoy the harbour, the beach, the lovely pedestrian street with squares, the old part of town as well as the castle 'Aabenraa Slot', which is surrounded by water and trees (31 km).
The peninsular Løjt Land is characterized by a large number of restored houses with thatched roofs and is worth a visit (36 km).
'Sommerland Syd' in Tinglev is the largest amusement park in South Jutland. Here you will find action, speed and excitement for both children and adults (39 km).
