The quiet, cosy and elevated holiday house area by Varnæs is situated on the southern coast of the inlet 'Aabenraa Fjord', between the cove 'Varnæs Vig' and the point 'Varnæs Hoved'. The area is ideal for nature lovers, as the landscape is very varied and scenic here.
It is possible to buy groceries in Varnæs, and 16 km from here, the old market town Aabenraa offers good shopping possibilities, leisure activities and sights for the whole family.
The beach of Varnæs is a lovely, sandy beach, which is suitable for children and situated between the cove 'Varnæs Vig' and the point 'Varnæs Hoved'. Here you can swim, sail or fish from small boats.
It is possible to launch small boats from the beach if you wish to sail or fish on the inlet.
It is often possible to find amber between the stones at the point 'Varnæs Hoved'.
The point 'Varnæs Hoved' is a clay cliff, which rises from the sea, and from here you can enjoy a scenic view towards the northern part of Als and the cape 'Haderslev Næs'. Behind 'Varnæs Hoved' the landscape is slightly undulating and characterized by meadows, marshes, steep cliffs, small woods and a lake.
By the marsh 'Varnæs Stormose' you can experience a rich bird life.
The forest 'Varnæs Fællesskove' is a 34 hectares large area of hardwood forest. This forest also contains the long barrow 'Kæmpestenen'.
Anglers will find ideal opportunities along the shores of Aabenraa Fjord. Deep-sea fishing trips onboard a fishing vessel are arranged from Aabenraa. The area also offers more Put & Take fishponds.
Both sailors and windsurfers will find good conditions on Åbenrå Fjord, as the west wind blows directly into the inlet.
Golf players can make use of no less than 9 golf courses in South Jutland. Try f.x. the courses of 'Benniksgaard Golf Klub' by Gråsten or 'Sønderjyllands Golfklub' by Tinglev.
During the summer, a number of events take place in South Jutland. You can experience town fairs, riding at the ring, cattle show and markets.
The forest Varnæs Tykke contains the stone Kæmpestenen, which is surrounded by 93 kerbstones. A cleared burial chamber is visible in the middle. Den Gyldne Løve by Varnæsvig is an interesting gallery.
Visit Aabenraa and enjoy the harbour, the beach, the lovely pedestrian street with squares, the old part of town as well as the castle Aabenraa Slot, which is surrounded by water and trees (16 km).
The castle Gråsten Slot and the palace garden are surrounded by scenic nature with forest and a lake. The profusely decorated castle church and the park, which is abounding in flowers, are open to the public (17 km).
The historic mill Dybbøl Mølle from the year 1744 was formerly situated in a military area. Today the mill function as a museum and displays pictures and relics from the battlefield (19 km).
Visit Sønderborg with the scenic waterfront, the historic buildings, the good shopping possibilities and the castle, where you experience collections from the Middle Ages and up till today (20 km). The castle Sønderborg Slot has been restored according to the Baroque and contains i.a. a museum, which informs of the South Jutland history.
The area is rich in relics. One of Denmark's best preserved grave mounds Myrpold is scenically situated opposite Skarrev, and from here you can enjoy the magnificent view towards Als and Funen. When the burial chamber was discovered, grave gifts and 10 skeletons were found inside (25 km).
Go on a daytrip to the German border, which is situated only 32 km from Varnæs.
