Beach

Højer is situated right at the Jutland Wadden Sea, but the nearest sandy beach lies at Emmerlev Klev, only a few kilometres from Højer. This beach has a sandy bottom and shallow water and therefore it is very suitable for children. Furthermore, you have a fabulous view of the Wadden Sea and the islands Sild and Rømø from Emmerlev Klev. If you wish to experience the large, wide and white sandy beaches of the North Sea, you can go on a trip to the island Rømø, where you will find one of Europe's widest and the most beautiful beaches (40 km).

Nature

The nature surrounding Højer is both rough and beautiful. The marsh and the dikes protect the area against the Wadden Sea all year round. The preserved area around Højer has a rich bird life, which can be observed from the many hiking trails. Often you are able to observe seals, which stay in the western parts of the Wadden Sea, but often seek towards the floodgate Højer Sluse in order to find food. Every spring and autumn you can be fortunate enough to experience the unforgettable phenomenon 'black sun'. One million starlings gather shortly before sunset, and perform, according to the locals, a drama in the sky.

Activities

The characteristic nature surrounding the area can be explored on food or on bicycle along the many waking and bicycle paths. In the southern part of Denmark, anglers have good possibilities, as you can fish along the coast or in the lakes and streams of the area. Furthermore, the area offers more Put & Take fishponds. The area also has more good golf courses, i.a. in Tønder, Arrild, Toftlund and Ribe. Go on a daytrip to the German border, which lays only about 10 km from Højer.

Worth a visit

The mill and marsh museum 'Højer Mølle- og Marskmuseum' is housed in Denmark's largest Deutsch mill and shows an exhibition about flood and life in the marsh. The floodgates 'Højer Gl. Sluse' from 1861 and 'Vidåslusen', the new floodgate in Højer from 1980, were both erected in order to protect the coast of the area. Between Emmerlev and Hjerpsted you will find 32 mounds from the bronze ages. The church Hjerpsted Kirke was build out of granite in 1150, and with its location right at the ocean, the church is a very beautiful sight (9 km). Visit Tønder and experience the cosy atmosphere in Denmark's oldest provincial town with the interesting historic museums and the many good restaurants. The old Renaissance chapel from the Middle Ages in the town Møgeltønder (9 km) and the park, surrounding the castle Schackenborg, are also worth a visit.

Southern Jutland has a number of historical sights. Visit for example the culture town Løgumkloster and go exploring in the interesting convent, erected by monks in the 12th century (29 km). Or see the old ruined palace at Trøjborg, where the former owner is said to haunt the place at night. LEGOLAND, app. 110 km from Højer, is build out of 50 million toy bricks.
