Løgumkloster is a cozy city with plenty of culture and history. You will be close to an evocative old urban environment with a castle and a pretty abbey church. The wide sandy beaches by the North Sea are only a short drive away, and so is the isle of Rømø. The area offers a series of attractions, small, nice cities, and you are only 20 km away from the German border.
Nature at the western coast of Southern Jutland is unique and a big area has been zoned for Nationalpark Vadehavet. A part of the national park consists of wadden sea, but also sand dunes, marshland and salt meadow. You will see a unique vegetation and animal life that benefit from the enormous richness of nutrition in the Wadden Sea. There are quite a few paths for walking and biking in the area, which furthermore is just land of milk and honey for bird enthusiasts. Behind the dykes of the Wadden Sea at the Ballum Enge, you could watch geese, ducks, grey herons, owls and a lot of waders. The impressive natural phenomenon the Sort Sol occurs in spring and in the autumn, when huge crowds of starlings form big, black formations in the sky.
Enjoy the beautiful nature along the Brede brook in a canoe in the river valley from Løgumkloster to Bredebro. The river winds through the beautiful landscape and the trip changes all the time between calm water and strong streams. You can rent canoes at the Vidaa Kano and the Løgumkloster Kanoudlejning. There are lots of paths and walking routes in the beautiful river valley between Bredebro and Løgumkloster, where you can walk along the Brede brook. Brede brook is just heaven for anglers and is included in the top ten best fishing spots in Denmark. Especially sea trout and salmon take the anglers "bait".
The Løgumkloster church dates back to about 1225-1325 as an abbey church belonging to the Cistercian Order. Only a part of the southern wing has been kept. To the west of the church you will see the castle, built in 1614 as a hunting lodge for the duke of Gottorp. Today, the castle accomodates the Præstehøjskolen (Priesters'' high school) and the Folkekirkens Pædagogiske Institut. (the pedagogical institue of the Danish national church). Trøjborg Slotsruin used to be a castle that belonged to Queen Margrethe 1, among others. Free entrance to the castle ruins (17 km). You can learn more about life in the marshland over the years at the Mølle- og Marskmuseum, situated in the biggest Dutch mill in Denmark (18 km). In Møgeltønder you wil see paved streets, the Schackenborg castle and park and the ancient castle church from the Middle Ages and the renaissance. A beautiful, old city that welcomes many tourists every year (17 km).
Visit the world famous amusement park LEGOLAND and spend a nice day full of fun and a lot of activities for the entire family (95 km). Take a trip to Rømø and enjoy the nice, sandy beach and the two cozy seaports of Havneby and Lalolk with coffee houses, eating places and shops. You get to Rømø via a 9.2 km long barrage (37 km). In Tønder you will feel the nice atmosphere in the oldest market town in Denmark with its paved streets and ancient houses. You will find historical museums, nice shops and a lot of excellent eating places (17 km). Hjemsted Oldtidspark is an Iron Age village with active workshops, presenting handicraft of the past. The museum has exhibitions of ancient history and local, archeological findings (20 km).
