Denmark's best holiday experiences started with a wedding in a holiday home...
In the 1970'ies the Danish holiday areas were filled with several empty holiday homes. At the same time numerous potential holiday guests wished to rent a holiday home in Denmark, but they didn't know how to find the houses.
As the North Jutland couple, Kjeld and Margit Andersen, celebrated their wedding in 1975, the party was given in their cosy holiday home. And when the bridal couple went on honeymoon, they hired out their holiday home.
Help to find each other
During the honeymoon Kjeld couldn't stop wondering how the people from near and far, who wished to rent a holiday home in Denmark, should find the available houses. Somehow the holiday homes and the holiday guests should be brought together, and perhaps he could help?
Sol og Strand arises
Back home again from their honeymoon the couple started a small rental company in a barn in North Jutland. The business grew and in 1992 it moved to new premises in the seaside town Blokhus. The communication happened through printed catalogues in more languages, but the message still didn't reach the whole world, much to the annoyance of Kjeld.
The solution appears
In 1998 the big change took place: The holiday homes of Sol og Strand were put on the internet. Now Kjeld could introduce the holiday homes to persons in the whole world. With the website of Sol og Strand in 6 languages the holiday guests could now easily find their dream house for the holiday among the 5,000 Danish holiday homes of Sol og Strand.
The guests get more than a holiday home
And besides renting a holiday home, holiday guests from all countries can receive news from the holiday destinations, information about the holiday areas and nearby attractions, buy admission tickets as well as read about the experiences of other guests in the holiday homes.
Thus the small and family owned rental company became Denmark's best provider of holiday experiences.
Holidays with heart

Sol og Strand is owned by the foundation “Fonden Sol og Strand ved Margit og Kjeld”, which was established in 2019 by Margit and Kjeld Andersen. The two founders wanted to take a circular approach to supporting good causes and provide support where it was needed. They also wanted with all their hearts to ensure that Sol og Strand continued to be a Danish-owned company – today and tomorrow.
The foundation has two objectives – to ensure the continued positive development of Sol og Strand, and to provide funding to charitable organisations and local initiatives.
The intention is that holiday visitors, employees and holiday homeowners will feel that they are part of a “holiday with a heart of gold” when it is a Sol og Strand holiday.
